(LESSON 3):-- The Science Behind How Your Habits Work

Here, there are three simple patterns your habits follow to get formed and I call this simple patterns TAB (T=the trigger, A=the action and B=benefit).
1. The trigger (T)
2. The action (A)
3. The benefit (B)
Let me show you what the three habit pattern means by applying it in a typical habitual lifestyle.
Step1: using my days in Hostel schools as an example, let us use the regulating bell as illustration. Those days, the regulator will ring the bell very early in the morning to remind the students that the day has brake, which is the trigger (a regular reminder).
Step2: then the students wake up to prepare to take off the normal daily activities, they brush their teeth, get to the praying square and eat the break-fast and start moving to the class room (the action taken).
Step3:after the day, they must have benefitted by getting educated in one topic or the other and must have improved their lives by following a regular routine of life which will now form a perpetual lifestyle as a habit in their lives (the benefit).
And repeating this process for over a long period of time made almost all the students live it as a lifestyle. No more reminding them to partake in a particular way of doing things.
Repeatedly, they formed a long lasting habit due to accumulation of small decisions made over a period of time.8
NOTE: following this same cycle of life for a period of time will eventually make your behavior a habit.


All habits form by the same 3–step process. (TAB, Created by KingsleyAnyi).Now, this is how you can use this process to create a new habit----
Step1: using current habit as a reminder to the new one to be formed
What do you think your friend will advise you on, when you might have informed him or her that you want to form a new habit? From all indication, he or she will tell you to exercise self-control and all of that. Real, self-control is good but, self-control without process and routine will soon lead you to the bad habit you already formed as a9
Result of routine which is accumulation of small decisions made in negative ways over time.
Here is what to do with the first simple pattern of habit formation which is trigger,
From my own experience; I wanted to start rinsing my mouth with TCP antiseptic after mouth brushing in the morning. Do you know what I did to form this as a habit? I guess you do not.
I tried reminding myself this literally but I failed severally then I device a trigger alert means by, keeping my bottle of TCP antiseptic where my mouth washing apparatuses are, so this help me immediately because, I started reminding myself about that every time I want to brush my teeth due to, having kept it where my tooth-brushing apparatuses are I always catch a sight of it and my brain get to notice that immediately and that was how that trigger led to habit formation.
Step2: always strive to make your habits incredibly easy to start
The desire to make incredible change seems to be a challenge before each and every one of us in life. Seeing a well successful fellow makes you think you wish to be incredibly successful within a short period of time. You want to lose 300 pounds weight within just a period of one week, I see how fast you are in achieving that status but, the process is what you forget to enquire for. How was that athlete able to achieve this?
Loosing incredible weight should be as a result of accumulated tiny habitual lifestyle formed over a period of time. And the process was made easy and that was why that weightlifter was able to be admirable 10
As he/she is. I guess this was what helps in making it possible to repeat that pattern over and over again.

Assuming you want to start a new habit and begin living healthier and happier, then I has one suggestion that I cannot emphasize enough: start small. In the words of Leo Babauta, “make it so easy that you cannot say no.”

Step3: please, do not forget to reward yourself
There is the need to celebrate after a successful event in life, (as human, there is call for celebration in life)
I think there is an important reason to reward your-self when it comes to habit formation. It is not easy to form a beneficial habit after you must have lived with bad ones for long period of time.
Here is what I always do whenever I finish my weightlifting exercise, immediately I feel satisfy and dropped my gym I go by the involuntary self-promotion of congratulating myself by saying:
“Thank you for today, I am ok for now” this I always do repeatedly to the extent I do not know when I do make such utterance whenever I finished a gym count.
Though, I sometimes ask myself who am I thanking, but by reality I know a supernatural being which is the nature made it possible for me to get down to it.

Repeatedly, I have accumulated this thanks giving if I may say, to the extent that I do not again know when I do make such statement. Now, it is a habit of thanks giving to myself and my nature. This always motivates me to do more and do get satisfied and happy after all of that.
So, there is need to reward yourself after any habit formation which you managed to make linger as to accumulate its count to being able to form it into habit.
We have covered the science of habit formation; let us talk about how to use it in real life.

No doubt, with these ideas, you should be well engaged to make change in your life and stick to healthier habitual and moral lifestyle for the long term.

1. Knowledge without action is entirely useless. You are now well equipped with tools to use and change your life, now it is time to do it. I know you have a lot of goals that are important to you, then, use these ideas to make it a reality.
