(LESSON 12):-- All Knowledge is But Memory; Do You Think Habit is Memory?
According to Thomas De Quincy, he said and I quote: - “there is no such thing as ultimate forgetting; once traces are impressed upon the memory, it is indestructible.”
The basis of all business success start from accurate and retentive memory, that is why the great philosopher Plato went ahead to say it this way, “all knowledge is but remembrance.” And one strong example for the time being is that: ___ you could not be reading this article right now, if you did not remember the sounds of the twenty-six letters of our alphabet.
This may seem a bit strange to your understanding, but it is true anyway. You would have to start learning everything from scratch, if you were to lose your memory completely, just like a new born baby. This will entail that you will totally forget how to dress, or shave, or apply your make-up, even how to drive a car, or whether to use a table knife or spoon for your regular eating activities.
And as we all know, habits are those tiny actions carried out by you which accumulates to regular activity that is committed to memory as time goes on. You see, we can say that all the the things we attributed to habit, should equally be attributed to memory. So, habit is memory.
MNEMONICS: (a large part of a trained memory).
Going back to the ancient Greek civilization the word “mnemonic” is derived from the name of the Greek Goddess, Mnemosyne; and, that is why memory systems were used as far back as in early Greek civilization. The decline these days is because trained memory systems are not known and used by many more people.
Yet most people who have learned the secret of Mnemonics in memory, been amazed on their tremendous ability to remember, and also on the kudos they always receive from their friends and family members.
So, does it not look wiser and sweet if you are the only one at the office who could remember every style number and price; why not be the only one who could get up at the party, being able to demonstrate something that everyone could get marveled?
Let us examine this question which I have always come across people asking. Most people ask: “is it not confusing to remember too much?”
And my answer to this question should be capital “No” because; there is no limit to the capacity of the memory. A man named Lucius Scipio was able to remember all the names of people from Rome those days. I know this may sound strange to you but it does happen. You may be thinking, what will I be using remembering all the names of the people of Rome to do? But remember this, how can you be able to use the secrete principles of success towards ones aim which is “Auto-suggestion” If you are not capable to remember?
Because, auto-suggestion is just self-suggesting to yourself those things you need do daily in order to attain the desired success in life. Then, to auto-suggest is to remind, and to remind is to remember, and remembering is to commit to memory.
That is why Cyrus was able to call every soldier in his army by name because he committed to memory. And Seneca went ahead to being able to memorize and repeat two thousand words, after hearing them just once.
The more you remember, the more you can remember. The memory can be attributed to the muscles in many ways. As the muscle is supposed to be exercised and developed in order to give proper service and use. So you develop the memory too. The only difference is that a muscle can be overstrained and become muscle over-stretched while the memory cannot.
So, there is no such thing as a bad memory. Please bear this in mind because, I know it may come as a shock to those of you who have used your supposedly “bad” memories as an excuse for years. Still I repeat, there is no such thing as a bad memory. There are only trained or untrained memories.
The fact now is this; almost all untrained memories are one-sided. So, people who can remember names and faces, cannot remember telephone numbers, and those who remember phone numbers, will never for the life of them remember the names of people they wish to call.
Like I mentioned in my previous article “mastering your memory; how keen is your observation?” (LESSON 11), anything you wish to remember must in some way or the other, be associated in your mind to something you already know or remember.
While most of us will argue that they have remembered, or do remember many things without associating them with anything else. Very true for that! But when you associate knowingly, then that is when you will recognize that you would already have the beginning of a trained memory.
See the fact here, most things you have remembered, have been associated subconsciously with something else that you already knew or remembered. Mark this important word here, “subconsciously” because, you will not realize what is going on in your subconscious; if you do, I do not think you will withstand the frightening nature of it. So, what you subconsciously associated strongly will surely be remembered, what was not associated strongly, will be forgotten. You cannot help it in any way, since this callisthenic mental attitude takes place without your knowledge.
In my subsequent articles, I will be teaching you to associate anything you want to, consciously instead of subconsciously. As soon as you have learned that then, you have acquired a trained memory. And you should have in mind that the system I am teaching is an aid to your normal or true memory. Whether realized or not, it is your true memory, that does the work for you.
A very thin line exists between a trained memory and the true memory, and as you will continue to apply my systems, I assure you that, that line will begin to fade. So, after using this system consciously for a while, it will become automatic with you and you will start doing it subconsciously (unknowingly). That is it friends!
