(LESSON 11):-- Mastering Your Memory. How keen is Your Observation?
Using the road traffic light as a scenario, I should be asking you this question: which color of light is on top of the traffic light? And I know that your first thought over this question is that this is an easy question to answer.
Let us assume you are in one of the current quiz shows that pay a lot of money for correct answer. And it is entailed that you must answer this question correctly to win the top prize. Now, which color of light is on top of the traffic light, the Red or the Green?
Picturing yourself in the above quiz position, you are truly in a confused situation now, because you are not really sure which light are on top, are you? But if you are sure, probably you are one of the minorities who has observed what most people only see.
Sincerely speaking, there is a world of difference between seeing and observing; this is due to the fact that most of the people whom I put the above question, either have given a wrong answer or are not sure of what the answer should be, even though they come in contact with the road traffic light every day.
By the way, the answer goes like this; Red is always on top of the traffic light. Green is always on the bottom. If there happens to be a third color, this is usually yellow, and it is for caution, and always in the center. Well, while you claim you are sure Red is the correct answer, get ready to get punctured a bit by another observation test from me. And I hope this will puncture your pride a little bit.
Please I urge you do not look at your wrist watch, please once again, do not look at your wrist watch and you should get ready to answer this question. The number “six” on your watch dial, is it the Arabic #6, or the Roman number VI? Think this over for a moment before you look at your wrist watch.
You should decide your answer as it was really important that you answer correctly. Remember, you are on a quiz show again, and there is a lot of money at stake to be won. Ok, I know you have decided on your answer, now, you are free to look at your watch and see if you were right. Were you? Or were you wrong in either case, may be because your watch does not have a six at all?
The small dial that ticks-off the seconds usually occupies that space on most modern watches. If I may ask, did you answer this question correctly? Whether you did or did not, you suppose to look at your watch to check. Can you be able to tell the exact time on your watch? I guess not, but you just looked at your watch a second ago.
Again my good friend, you saw, but you failed to observe. I suggest you should try this on your friends. Although people see their watches innumerable times every day, few of them can be able to tell you about the numeral six.
I pray you should not feel too badly if you were unable to answer any of these questions, because like I said before, most people cannot. I guess the systems and methods used in this article makes you try to observe automatically, you will find more interesting observation exercises in my latter articles. Just continue following up.
The system will also make you use your imagination with more facility than ever before. OBSERVATION is one of the things important to training your memory. And the other important thing is ASSOCIATION. NOTE THIS: we cannot possibly remember anything that we do not observe.
After observing something, either by sight or hearing, in order to be remembered, it must be associated in our minds with or to something we already know or remember.
Since you will automatically observe using this system, it is association with which we will mostly concern ourselves. Now, what is association pertaining to memory?
ASSOCIATION pertaining to memory simply means the connecting or typing up of two (or more) things to each other. If you managed to remember anything, it is due to the fact that you have subconsciously associated it to something else.
Let us look at this case example: “Every Good Boy Does Fine.” Do you make meaning out of this sentence? If you do, then you must have studied music in the school as a young star. Every child that studies music is taught to remember the lines of the music treble clef, by the fact of remembering, “Every Good Boy Does Fine.”
We need not under-rate the importance of association, and I will prove to you that you have used definite conscious associations many times without even realizing it. Because, the letters, E, G, B, D and F do not mean a thing to you I guess. They are just letters, which are difficult to remember. But the sentence, “Every Good Boy Does Fine.” Does have meaning right! And it is something you know and understand.
The new thing E, G, B, D and F which is the thing you had to commit to memory was associated with something you already knew which is “Every Good Boy Does Fine.”
The systems and methods in my coming articles will show you how the principles and ideas of simple conscious associations can be applied to remembering anything. Yes, that should be fantastic --- remembering anything, including names and faces, items, objects, facts, figures, etc.
This is to mean that the systems and methods you will learn from my articles about mastering and making efficient use of your memory can be applied to anything and precisely everything in every day social or business life no matter who you are.
