(LESSON 54):-- PRIDE…. Problems With Pride And How To Overcome Them
If you ask me what brings a huge barrier to success I will tell you that PRIDE is the number one. This hinders the development of talent that we need to examine it in greater details.
Below are the few of the negative effects of pride:
1. Our minds are closed to new ideas with pride:=
Teach-ability is a willingness to open our minds to new ideas. And pride prevents this feature called teach-ability. This wise statement made it clear and it says:
“Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”
2. Pride Closes Our Minds To Feedback:=
I have not been a good listener over past years, but I have learned that I cannot do anything of real value alone. It takes humility to seek feedback, wisdom to understand it, analyze it and appropriately act on it.
Achievement requires team work, and you have to know that none of us is as smart as all of us. When you are willing to listen and receive input, your next idea improves, and not only that, it improves you as a person too.
3. We hardly admit mistakes due to pride:=
Undoubtedly, one of the best ways we grow is by admitting mistakes and learning from them. William Bolitho, a writer observed this:
“The most important thing in life is not to capitalize on our gain. Any fool can do that. The really important thing is to profit from our losses. That requires intelligence and makes the difference between a man of sense and a fool.”
4. Pride prevents us from making needed changes:=
Pride caused me to defend some works that sometimes should have not been defended. Remember, when it comes to changing others, we always want to do it immediately.
But on the issue of changing ourselves, we do not that so fast! This is a problem with all of us.
Then, having startedand briefly analyzed the effects of pride, let us delve into how you can overcome a pride problem. But before then, if pride is an obstacle to your growth, you need to take some deliberate and strategic steps to overcome it.
Sincerely speaking, it may not be easy because, one of our natural passions to subdue is pride. To start the process of beating it down, stifling it and subduing it, here is what I suggest:
1. Admit your pride:=>
The first step is to recognize that pride is a problem because; those who are bound by it are often unaware of it. To defeat this pride, we need to embrace humility, and it is funny that few of us desire that. And if anyone would like to acquire humility, the first step is to realize that he or she is proud.
One of the biggest problems with people is the natural tendency to believe or to hope that they are indispensible, that the world will stop and take notice of them if anything happens.
But as someone who has witnessed many funerals, I have to tell you that the world moves on when the dead is gone. When someone dies, the family and closest relations grieve. But it is funny that the rest of the people who attended the funeral are more worried about the rice and stew than the dearly departed. So, do your best but remember that no one is indispensible.
2. Try always to express gratitude:=>
I think that the least expressed virtueis gratitude. And it is the most appreciated expression by recipients. To learn how to express gratitude, keep a grateful journal every night, list five things that happened this day that you are grateful for.
This will start to change your perspective every day in life. If you can learn to focus on what you have, you will always see that the universe is abundant; you will have more.
If you concentrate on what you do not have, you will never have enough. For people who are filled with selfish pride, they are not grateful because, they never think they get as much as they deserved. To break this kind of pride, express gratitude continually.
3. Learn to laugh at yourself:=>
Engaging in humor at your own expense shows that pride is not a problem, rather a big way of breaking a pride problem, NOTE THIS: people with pride problem rarely laugh at themselves. For quick help, let us digest this short Chinese proverb:
“Blessed are they that laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be entertained.”
A lawyer who had a distinguished career at age forty four in 1977 refused to take himself too serious and maintained his sense of humor unlike fellow colleagues.
He maintained that, not because you wear black gown and sit at high level position before the people that you have to remind and see yourself as another person who happens to be a lawyer elected to serve as a judge.
So, in order to remind himself of this humble statement above, he used to keep a small statement near his private court room door which says:
“To us you will always just be the same old jackass.”
This was a statement and name given to him by relatives. Remember, to expand your talent, you must have to kill pride and become teachable.
See you next time!
