(LESSON 30):-- Five Enemies Of Perseverance (Staying Power), And How To Eliminate Them.

Tenacity (the determination to continue what you are doing) is where the strength lies solely. This perseverance is a trait (a particular characteristic that can produce a particular type of behavior) that can be cultivated.

So, the initial step to developing it is to understand and find ways to eliminate its five greatest enemies, and below are the five enemies of perseverance and how to eliminate them:

(1) Giving Up (a lifestyle of giving up):=
One cloudy evening like that, a little boy had been promised an ice cream by his grandpa if he could follow him to some errands.

The longer they go the more difficult the young boy was finding it to be good and be eager to follow up. “How long will it be?” the little boy asked.

“Not too long,” the grandpa responded. “I have had just one more stop before we get ice cream.” The old man re-assured the little boy.

“I do not know if I can make it, grandpa,” the little boy lamented. “I can be good. I just cannot be good enough for so long.” The boy grudgingly muffed-out and gave-up to go back where they started. While he was gone for few minutes, the ice cream tricycle appeared.

You see! We were always given a break as kids if we did not follow through on a task. That is to be expected because, children have the tendency to jump from one activity to another and equally they can bounce from idea to idea.

But such is not expected from adults when you want to be successful. So, vacillating (to be uncertain on what to do) people seldom succeed.

Having explained things about one of the enemies of perseverance which is GIVING UP, below are how to eliminate this particular enemy:

(i) Be consistent and persistent in a particular objective if you desire to be successful.

(ii) Cultivate the habit of perseverance by doing one thing every day that leads to that your dream.

(iii) Overcome the habit of giving up by trying again any time you feel like giving up.
That takes us to the second enemy of perseverance (staying power)

(2) Believing That Life Should Be Easy:=
I believed so much that life is easy when I was growing up. In fact, I thought that life is so aligned that every step required not much my effort, and that after schools I will start making money.

If you ask me how, I do not really know but, I solely was lost in that euphoria (extreme happiness) of believing all of that. Latter, I realized that, succeeding requires just the same fall-outs and winning just like you do experience in marriage.

Well, to eliminate this particular enemy of perseverance “BELIEVING LIFE IS EASY” do these:

(i) Have the right expectations when going into anything. This will make the battle half-won.

(ii) View your failure as a reason to recommit (come back).

(iii) Your failure should be a reminder to refocus on your goals with more determination.
Here comes the third enemy and its solutions.

(3) Wrongly Seeing Success As A Destination:=
Complacency (feeling of calm satisfaction with your own ability) is the last hurdle any winner must overcome before attaining potential greatness.

This can take root when you are feeling good about what you are and what you have achieved. Sound very ironic right! But we should know that past success can be the fiercest enemy to future success.

Let us review the experience of Sylvester when he started feeling that he have arrived:
“Sylvester described a day when he came to the realization that he had made it.

And he started to wonder what was next for him. According to Sylvester; “I started to change, from thinking WHY NOT about opportunity that approached me to thinking BUT WHY when an opportunity arouse. I lost the hunger.”

This young man latter broke out of this complacency and his solution should be an eye-opener for us, hear him reel-out his solutions:

(i) First thing was to recognize that I was on a plateau, (that is, recognize you are lost with I do not care attitude)

(ii) Second was to close the door on the success of yesterday. (see your success as have done, and do not leave on past success)

(iii) Once I did that, I was able to take steps to change. (Take steps to change and go after opportunities.)

According to Sylvester, “it is good to celebrate and take a rest, but not for long. We must learn how to close door on the success of yesterday.”

(4) A Lack Of Resilience:=
Resilience I refer to as significant characteristics of people who navigate the many transitions of life from birth to old age. This reflects individuals who changeably resemble a twig with a fresh, green living core.

Even when twisted out of shape, such a twig bends, but it does not break; rather, it springs back and continue growing. If we desire to persevere and make the most out of our talent and or career, this is how we must be.

Below are ways to eliminate this lack of resilience as an enemy of perseverance:

(i) Do not become dry, brittle and inflexible.

(ii) Please, endeavor to bounce back, no matter how we may feel.

(iii) Do not work only on the days you feel good.

Remember, you cannot get much done in life if you only work on the days you feel good. We have gradually come to the last enemy of perseverance which is;

(5) Lack Of Vision:=
Every creation you have ever seen or experienced is actually created twice. The first creation is the mental creation then comes the physical one.

Where does that creation come from? Everybody is conversant with the answer and for our proper understanding, the answer is VISION.

So, the solution to this lack of vision should be:

(i) Keep a larger vision in mind as you toil away at your craft or profession.

(ii) Right inside the eye of your mind, see what you want to create or do, and keep working toward it as you labor.

(iii) Maintain perspective, remain resilience, and persevere.

So, clearing away the five enemies of perseverance should be a preliminary step to becoming successful person. Know that, right thinking will always precede right action.

No doubt, with these ideas, you should be well engaged to make change in your life and stick to healthier habitual and moral lifestyle for the long term.

And my final two points should be:
1. Knowledge without action is entirely useless. You are now well equipped with tools to use and change your life, now it is time to do it. I know you have a lot of goals that are important to you, then, use these ideas to make it a reality.
