(LESSON 29): PERSEVERANCE:-- Developing “Staying Power” In Your Career And Or Talent Pursuit
Thousands of people have talent, but the only thing that counts is: do you have staying power? Perseverance which is (cultivating staying power) is never an issue of talent, not an issue of time at all.
It is strongly hinged on finishing so, talent is that hope for accomplishment while perseverance guarantees it. With this, I can go ahead and give us a six-word formula for success: “think things through --- then follow through.” This is because, many people like the idea of thinking things through, but only a few people follow through.
To succeed in whatever you do, you need to understand something about perseverance, so let us go down into 4 PRINCIPLES OF PERSEVERANCE:
1. Ability To Succeed Because You Are Determined To, Not Destined To:=>
In this aspect now, you have to bear in mind that, the difference between a successful person and others is never lack of strength, not even lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of “determination” (perseverance).
To succeed because you are determined, you do not have to sit back and wait for success because you think you deserved it. You keep moving forward and persevering because you are determined to achieve it.
2. In Perseverance, Life Is Not a Long Race, But Many Short Ones In Succession:=>
I find it difficult to believe solely with this short adage: “life is a marathon” reason being that, life is not very long race; actually, it is a long series of shorter races, one after another.
Going shortly back to the life of the great sailor and explorer of all times by name; Christopher Columbus, I learnt he faced incredible difficulties while sailing west in search of a passage to Asia.
He encountered extremely heavy storms with his crew members; equally, they experienced hunger and deprivation and dealt with extreme discouragement.
That is to say that, the crews of his three ships was near mutiny. But this man persevered. According to the account of the journey written even by Columbus, I recognized he said the same thing, day after day:
“TODAY WE SAILED ON.” And his perseverance paid off.
This is a clear indication that life is not a marathonbut a series of short successive race because, Columbus was making through the day, winning each short race.
3. Rewards In Life Is Released By Perseverance:=>
A corporate sales manager in a sales convention addressing almost two thousand plus sales people brought to their minds the rewards accrued to perseverance when he asked them:
“Did the Wright Brothers ever quit?”
The sales people were quick to answer No! Because, everybody know the inventor of airplane,
The sales manager went ahead to ask them again: “Did Thomas .A. Edison quit?”
With same voice as usual they all answered No! Because, everybody knew him as the inventor of electric bulb,
And lastly, the manager asked again: “DidThorndike Mckester ever quit?”
behold, there stood a confused silence for a long moment. Afterwards, a sales person summoned courage and stood up and asked, “Who in the world is ThorndikeMckester? Nobody hasheard of him.”
The sales manager now said; “of course you never heard of him ---- because he quit!”
So, it is the last step in the race that counts the most, the winner should be determined here because, the rewards comes here. Assuming you run every step of the race well except the last one and you stopped before the finish line, would the end result not be the same as if you never ran a step? I believe that is the case.
4. Perseverance Has a Compounding Effect On Life:=>
Great success lies just beyond the point when you are convinced your idea is not going to work.
Then, the question is; “how do you get beyond this point?” the answer is just to do the right thing, day after day. Remember this; there are no shortcuts to anything worthwhile.
So, every day that you do the right thing, like you work hard, treat others with respect, learn and grow --- you are probably investing in yourself.
To do these things everyday will take relentless perseverance I know! But if you practice the habit of doing them, your success will compound over time.
No doubt, with these ideas, you should be well engaged to make change in your life and stick to healthier habitual and moral lifestyle for the long term.
And my final two points should be:
1. Knowledge without action is entirely useless. You are now well equipped with tools to use and change your life, now it is time to do it. I know you have a lot of goals that are important to you, then, use these ideas to make it a reality.
2. Doing my best for our community is my priority so; we are here to support you. I write two articles for a small community each week, Monday and Thursday, and these small communities are people who are to getting better, living healthier, and making the world a better place.
I do my best to help them achieve their goals, and this is my part to play, and I will always like to do the same for you.
