(LESSON 27):-- PREPARATION: What Happens When You Do, Or Do Not Get Prepared And Six Preparation Principles
This is one of the most extensive articles written so far. Please, my humble readers take your time to read with patience and do not assume you already know what preparation is. I believe you will appreciate what you will discover. Scholarship
All is well that begins well. Ask athletes what happens when they do not get prepared for a game. Equally go ahead to ask business negotiators what happens in the negotiation tables when they meet unprepared.
When you do not get prepared, things you do not wish it happened begin to happen like things you wished it could happen. So, when athletes are out of position they automatically loose. Every one of them is aware of this.
Preparation positions people ahead correctly and often times, it is the separation between winning and losing. Let us start with what happens when you get prepared, to what happen when you do not, and equally the six preparation principles.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET PREPARED
Going back from 1492 to 1800, during the explorative time of the eighteenth centuries when great adventurers and scientist had explored most of the interior of Africa, Australia and the Americas.
One great American leader then known as Thomas Jefferson became interested about knowing the interior of the North America than any other American leader.
Much of the territory between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mississippi River (south of St. Louis) had been explored, when Jefferson became the president of America, two third of the occupant of the nation lived within fifty miles of the coast and few of them had traveled west of the Appalachian mountains.
In 1790s, Jefferson tried to launch an exploratory expedition as the member of the American philosophical society. Knowing the fact that this kind of venture needed an expert to execute, he picked a trained scientist from Franceknown as Andre Michaux.
Jefferson directed him to find the shortest route between the United States and Pacific Ocean so, in 1763, Michaux made it as far as Kentucky before he was exposed as an agent of the French government which made Jefferson to recall the mission.
Now, choosing the right person for the job is what Jefferson wanted. RIGHT PERSON PREPARED FOR THE JOB.
Meriwether Lewis was selected to lead the expedition. Lewis, who was only (18) eighteen years old, was known as person who lived in the frontier in Georgia for three to four years where he had learned many frontier skills. And as a boy of eighteen he was known to go out hunting in the middle of the night on his own.
Despite these frontier skills, Lewis had low formal education. Jefferson; in order to grind him, took hold of him to the presidential villa where he worked as his personal aid. Not only did Lewislive in the white house with the president, he learned complete science in botany, natural history, mineralogy and astronomy.
With his firmness of constitution and character, prudent, habits adapted to the forest (wood), and a familiarity with the Indian manners and character, requisite for the undertaking,all these qualified Lewis as ready for the expedition which later became a huge success.
Captain Lewis had all the frontier skills yes! No doubt about that but, do you think he could have embarked on this kind of huge expedition without proper preparation? I doubt so, for Jefferson took it upon himself to prepare him right from the white house for years.
So, the out-put became a massive step-up without fear of failure and zeal to conquer due to courageousness having known his teams were prepared.
Though Lewis lost one member of his team, the loss was as a result of personal sickness not really gotten out of the event. When you get well prepared for an event, you become courageous and chances of winning is 100% guaranteed with little or no loss.
NOT PREPARED: Why People Fail To Get Prepared.
The truth about preparation could be learned from the life of this noble man Lewis from the short story above. Early preparation gives rise to spectacular achievement.
At last after regret, it is always easy to come to the recognition of the value of preparation. So, our next question should be, WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE FAIL TO PREPARE?
1. Inability To See The Value Of Preparation Before Action:=>
Lack of preparation is the reason businesses fail today. They say “lack of money” this is true but the second reason is lack of preparation. Many people fail to see the importance of getting trained before venturing into any event in life.
They make the mistake of resorting to action before getting prepared. To get prepared, outline your objective and set-out plans to get there. Then, just like Lewis did, gradually involve yourself in activities related to that event daily, and this will see you closer to that dream. Do not fail to get prepared before taking action.
2. Failure To Appreciate The Value Of Discipline:=>
Let us first explain the meaning of discipline. Discipline is doing what you really do not want to do so that you can do what you really want to do.
So, try to understand the importance of discipline while pursuing any goal. As we all can testify that the most frustrating thing about preparation is that it usually takes much more time than the actual event one prepares for.
If discipline is not needed for one to get well prepared, why is it that musician may practice so many hours to present few minutes show? Disciplineis needed for one to stay-put practicing.
Discipline is required to keep preparing long hours for something that will be over quickly. When you have a subject on hand, study it profoundly. Look at how to cultivate discipline my own way:
--- When preparing for a task and getting bored. I normally device a strategy I called “working in bit” I do my best and resort to rest for few minutes or hours then, I might have resuscitated.
--- getting irritated handling the current project, close it up and seek another way of solving the same problem.
--- Always do a bit of that event daily which sees you to completeness.
SIX PREPARATION PRINCIPLES
• Getting Prepared Allows You To Tap Into Your Talent:=>
Every minute spent in preparation saves ten in execution. Listed below are questions you should ask yourself before you should embark on any trip, and they are quite simple;
(i) What work is to be done? (task)
(ii) How can I do this work? (process/method)
(iii) When is it to be done? (time)
(iv) Where is it to be done? (place)
(v) How fast can it be done? (duration)
(vi) What do I need to get it done? (tools)
Answering these questions will prepare you for what lies ahead, and when you are prepared, your career and or talent is positioned for maximum effect.
• Preparation Should Be A Process, Not An Event:=>
In this part of the black nation, we think in terms of events and instant solutions. Our young ones only listen when you talk about making money within few minutes and that is why they become victims of scams all over.
But preparation does not work that way. Why? The simple reason is because, it is all about you. Anything having to do with individuals and their success is process-oriented. Note this: leadership develops daily, not in a day. And if the daily learning and preparation ever stop, so will your productivity.
• Preparation Precedes Opportunity:=>
The greatest barrier to opportunity is; not being ready for it, not actually meeting thatopportunity. So, luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.
• To Prepare For Tomorrow Make The Right Use Of Today:=>
Preparing for today, creates the chances that you will not be repairing tomorrow.
• Preparation Needs Good Perspective:=>
There is need for one to be able or have the ability to anticipate his problems rather than to meet them as it comes. “If I had eight hours to cut down a tree, I did spend six sharpening my axe” ___ Abraham Lincoln
• Well Prepared Person Takes Immediate Action:=>
Preparation does not mean mastering of the facts. It does not mean knowing all the answers and arriving at a consensus. It means putting yourself in a better position to succeed.
The reason being that, people who enjoy preparation sometimes find themselves caught in the trap of over-preparing, and they do so to the point of not being able to act.
According to practical research made possible at Stanford University. The decision-making process at twelve technology companies was observed.
It was found that the fast deciders, who took three or four months to make major decisions, were much more effective than their slower counterparts who get all the facts and created consensus.
The slower group took up to eight months to prepare and decide, and at the time of finding resolution, the decision they made have become irrelevant.
Pre-Shot Routine for Preparation:
It contains three main steps:
You have to use it as a guideline in situations where you need to prepare yourself.
(i) Assessment--- how well do I evaluate?
Failure to accurately evaluate where you need to go and what it will take to get there likely will get you into trouble. Below are the questions to ask to assist in the assessment process:
• Where do I need to go? =>The process should begin with finding the right target which must be appropriate to finding your talent.
• What is the extent of my goal? =>You have to know how far is your goal to have a shot at making it there.
• What are the conditions? =>Take recognition of the conditions that may hinder or progress your pursuit because, the condition make all the difference in the world.
• What will it take to get there? =>It is very important to know your skills and limitations when making your assessment. This I refer to as knowing what club to use, remember that bad club selection is the number one error of amateurs.
The summary of the four questions you should ask yourself during the assessment are:
--- know exactly what you should be doing
--- What it will cost you in time
--- Effort and resources to get there
--- What obstacles you are likely to face
--- And what your personal limitations are
Knowing these things will position you to preparing yourself to achieve your goal.
(ii) Alignment__ am I in line correctly?
Have this in mind, you can perform your assessment process flawlessly and still miss target horribly. How? Just by lining up poorly,look at how to line up correctly.
To take your career or talent to next level ___ personally, professionally, relationally etc. you need to find someone who is better than you to help you in the preparation process.
Please, be open and honest with that person, so that he or she will be able to evaluate you and help you get there.
(iii) Attitude ___ how do I visualize?
After assessment and alignment comes the final process of preparation which is attitude, Believe in yourself and what you are doing. You should be able to see yourself doing it with your inner eye.
Note this: if you cannot imagine it, you probably will not be able to achieve it. Preparation is the hardest and most obvious thing to do in order to reach that your talent and or career job or any goal in life.
Most times, the preparation process is long and slow, it may require formal education, finding a mentor, getting out of your comfort zone. Whatever it requires, remember one thing; you must be ready when your time comes.
No doubt, with these ideas, you should be well engaged to make change in your life and stick to healthier habitual and moral lifestyle for the long term.

1. Knowledge without action is entirely useless. You are now well equipped with tools to use and change your life, now it is time to do it. I know you have a lot of goals that are important to you, then, use these ideas to make it a reality.
