(LESSON 17):-- How To Develop The Best That Is In a Person

No doubt about it, we all like to make people do what we want, or feel satisfied trying to make control of people our priority. As an employer, you may think that the only way to get your employees work hard as you wanted is to threaten to lay them off their jobs.

Whereas there is only one way under high heaven to get anybody to do anything you want them doing. And have you ever stopped to ask yourself what that way is?
Yes, I know you could answer me that, it is just by making that person want to do it.

Definitely, you can make someone want to give you his phone by sticking a gun in his head. You can equally make a child do what you want him/her to do by a whip. But remember, these cruel methods have serious undesirable repercussions with it.
The only way to get people do what you want is by giving them what they want. This will develop the best in that person. And what is that they want?

According to a man named Sigmud Freud; he said that everything a person does springs from two motives: -- the sex urge and – the desire to be great. So, the deepest urge in we human beings is the desire to be important. Now, let us delve into some of the things most people want in life.

1. Most people want health and life preservation
2. Sleep
3. Food
4. Money and what it can buy
5. Life after death
6. Sexual satisfaction
7. Good living of our children
8. A feeling of importance

In our lives as human beings, all these wants are almost gratified except one. This one is the one longing as deep as the desire for food or sleep --- which is seldom gratified.
And this is the-- “DESIRE TO BE GREAT.” In the proper terms, it is the desire to be important.

This is the craving to be “appreciated” which is the deepest principle in human beings. So, this is the gnawing and unfaltering human hunger, and any individual who honestly satisfy this heart throbbing hunger will have the power that can hold people in his or her palms.

The desire for a feeling of importance is one of the major distinguishing differences between us human and the animals. To illustrate further; a farmer who also do involve his smart dog into dog racing, had the luck of breeding good and skillful dog that always go home annually with thedesired first position and the medals involved.

As human beings who lives not by logic but by emotion, this farmer will always take it upon himself by displaying the golden ribbons won by his dog before his visitors at his home. He does this because, he feels appreciated and important all the time he do so.

As the case may be, the dog that is the sole owner of those medals does not even care about the recognition but the man does.
This is to tell you that the only way you can bring the best out of any person and makes him/her do whatever you want is by making that person feel a sense of IMPORTANCE AND APPRECIATED.

An American, Charles Schwab was being paid a million dollars annually by Andrew Carnegie as the then president of United State Steel Company as of 1921 when he was only thirty eight years old.
Not because he is better than other people, in fact, he testified that there are many in the company who know more things about steel than he did.

When asked what his secret was, this gentle man narrated as thus:
“I consider my ability to arouse enthusiasm among my people. And the greatest assets I possess and the way to develop the best that is in a person is by “appreciation” and “encouragement.”

As a web programmer, I have worked in five companies and decided to quit by myself. Most Nigerian employers lack this great key to making people do what you want them to do. So, whether aspiring, already existing or start-up entrepreneur always try to appreciate your employees even when they do it wrong instead of scolding on them.

Your career and or talent pursuit deepens when you are appreciated, that is when you will have the feeling of importance.

No doubt, with these ideas, you should be well engaged to make change in your life and stick to healthier habitual and moral lifestyle for the long term.

And my final two points should be:
1. Knowledge without action is entirely useless. You are now well equipped with tools to use and change your life, now it is time to do it. I know you have a lot of goals that are important to you, then, use these ideas to make it a reality.

2. Doing my best for our community is my priority so; we are here to support you. I write two articles for a small community each week, Monday and Thursday, and these small communities are people who are to getting better, living healthier, and making the world a better place.
